GREATER RICHMOND
TECHNOLOGY COUNCIL AND VIRGINIA SECRETARY OF TECHNOLOGY HOST
LEGISLATIVE RECEPTION AT THE LIBRARY OF VIRGINIA
Virginia Secretary of Technology Aneesh Chopra welcomed the Virginia technology sector to the annual Greater Richmond Technology Council (GRTC) Legislative Reception on Tuesday, Jan. 31, and told them to “use the networking here as an incubator for ideas to bring to me.” Chopra also noted that the first weeks of the 2006 legislative session, and the first weeks of Gov. Tim Kaine’s new administration, have been a boon to the technology sector with the bipartisan support of the proposed funding for technology and biotech research at universities throughout the Commonwealth. “Virginia delivers innovation to the rest of the country in information technology,” Chopra said during his brief remarks to the assembled business executives and government leaders attending the reception. “Technology drives economic and educational development, and is a key part of the legislative agenda in 2006.” The Greater Richmond Technology Council has set legislative priorities for 2006 that call on the Governor and the General Assembly to increase the Commonwealth’s investment in Virginia’s Center for Innovative Technology; develop programs to spur growth in university enrollment in math, science and engineering; facilitate public/private partnerships in technology innovation, particularly in support of the Virginia Information Technology Agencies’ partnership with Northrup Grumman to streamline IT operations state-wide; invest in e-business to enhance services to Virginia’s citizens; and to address sales tax changes that would establish Virginia as a “location of choice” for Internet-based businesses. The GRTC co-hosted the event with the help of corporate sponsors that included CACI, Dominion Power, Genworth Financial, Northrup Grumman, BusinessWire, Capital One, Cisco, Computer Resource Team, Keane, the Greater Richmond Partnership, NET Telcos, SyCom Technologies, TEKSystems, ATS, BranCore Technologies, Code X, Core Consulting, Dataline, Lee Technologies, the National Institute of Aerospace, Nortel and Verizon.
