Who

How Technology Is Impacting the Newspaper Business – An Insider’s View

George Boatright, Chief Information Officer, Media General

George Boatright, Media General’s Director of Information Technology, is intimately familiar with the impact of technology – particularly the Internet – on newspapers across the U.S. The media industry – particularly the newspaper business – faces technology challenges daily as they work to maintain market share in an increasingly competitive landscape.

On Thursday, April 17, 2008, Mr. Boatright will speak at the Greater Richmond Technology Council’s (GRTC) monthly Good Morning Technology breakfast. His presentation will cover Media General’s history, and talk about the current challenges and opportunities the company faces as they work to put out daily newspapers and maximize their on-line media presence. He will also detail the lessons learned from last year’s fire at Media General’s Hanover, VA production plant.

Mr. Boatright is a native Virginian – he grew up in Lynchburg, graduated from William and Mary with a BBA degree in accounting, earned an MBA from the University of Richmond, and is a Certified Public Accountant. George left bean-counting behind in 1999, moving into the world of IT, and currently serves as the Director of Information Technology for Media General, leading IT initiatives throughout the company.

The April GRTC breakfast will be held at The Place at Innsbrook, starting at 7:30am and winding up at 9:00am. Registration is required.  The event is sponsored by CXI, offering the perfect combination of astute leadership, technical know-how, and state of the art infrastructure to help companies achieve their goals. CXI provides ERP, professional services, and functional sourcing consulting, as well as IT staffing solutions. CXI: advanced solutions for a changing world.

The Greater Richmond Technology Council (GRTC) is invited to watched high school teams go head-to-head in the annual F.I.R.S.T. (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition at VCU’s Siegel Center on Friday, March 7, 2008, during the monthly GRTC Good Morning Technology breakfast. The 9th Annual Richmond Regional F.I.R.S.T. Competition, an event that draws student competitors from over 60 schools in seven states, the District of Columbia and Canada, is also an annual event for the GRTC – many of its members are sponsors of F.I.R.S.T teams. GRTC members and their guests had the chance to observe the action from the competition floor, where robots are put through their paces in a series of challenging matches, or from the pits, where students work feverishly to fine-tune their machines before and during the competition.

Ford & Microsoft Present Innovations in Transportation

Who

For our February Breakfast, the Council is pleased to have Aneesh Chopra, Secretary of Technology for the Commonwealth of Virginia as moderator for a discussion on “Technology Innovations in Transportation”.

Joining the discussion will be Jim Buczkowski, (left) Director, Electrical Systems Engineering, FORD Motor Company and Larry Williams,  (right)President and CEO, Roadside Telematics Corporation.

Mr. Bucskowski will talk about “Innovation in the Car.” He’ll profile Ford’s exclusive hands-free, voice-activated communications system, Sync. Developed in conjunction with Microsoft, Sync allows drivers to make calls on their Bluetooth-enabled phones, select and play music from their MP3 players, and receive voice-translated text messages, all by way of voice activation. This makes it easier for drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road. Mr. Bucskowski will also share information on Travel Link, the next generation of navigation systems being introduced in the Ford line.

A Ford Fusion equipped with Sync will be on display outside the meeting. A Sync specialist will be available for hands-on demonstrations for attendees and media following the program.

Along with Mr. Bucskowski, Larry Williams will address “Innovation in Solutions for Transportation.” He will share information on a new system that can assist police, fire, and EMS personnel in notifying drivers’ emergency contacts in case of an accident. It will save valuable time and provide, in some cases, life-saving information.
