BIOS
In December 2005, Rich Pollack became the
Vice President and Chief Information Officer for VCU Health System in
Richmond. For two years prior to that time he had been the Chief
Information Officer (ad interim) for Clarian Health Partners, A 2
billion-dollar health system in Indianapolis.
From 1999 until late 2003, he held IT leadership positions at The
University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center (MDA) in Houston,
Texas. In this capacity, he oversaw a 500-person I.S. organization with
projects totaling more than $100 million. The Division of Information
Services at MDA supported all of the clinical, academic, research and
administrative functions. As such, Rich maintained close and effective
oversight and working relationships with key leaders in these areas. He
joined MDA in June 1999 as Associate Vice President for Enterprise
Applications and became CIO 16 months later.
Rich has more than 30 years of health care management experience with 18
of those years working with clinical systems implementation and support.
Prior to moving to Houston, Rich served as Director of Information
Systems for Nash Health Care Systems in Rocky Mountain, North Carolina.
Rich and his Nash team successfully implemented a computer-based patient
record system for the 450-bed, multi-hospital organization, which
received special commendation as best industry-practice from JCAHO. Rich
holds an M.S. degree in medical biology. He is a Fellow of HIMSS, member
of CHIME, and a Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and
Management Systems.
Rich now resides in Chesterfield County with his fiancée, Jennifer. He
has two children. Aaron (28) is working in Manhattan as a criminal
defense attorney for NYC Legal Aid. Debbie (30) just received her PhD in
Clinical Psychology and is on the faculty at Syracuse University.

Marilyn Tavenner was
appointed Secretary of Health and Human Resources by Governor Kaine in
January of 2006. As Secretary of Health and Human Resources, she
oversees 12 agencies, employing over 18,000 people, including the
Departments of Health, Mental Health, Social Services, Health
Professions and Medical Assistance Services.
Prior to her appointment, Marilyn spent the previous 25 years working
for the Hospital Corporation of America (HCA). She began her career as a
Staff Nurse and steadily rose through the ranks; becoming CEO of
Richmond, VA based Johnston-Willis Hospital in April of 1993 and
finishing out her service to HCA as President of Outpatient Services, a
national position spearheaded by Ms. Tavenner.
As an active community member and healthcare advocate, Marilyn has
served on the Board of several organizations including the American
Hospital Association, Meals on Wheels, United Way, Greater Richmond
Partnership, and the YMCA. She also served as Past President of both the
Virginia Hospital Association and the Chesterfield Business Council. Ms.
Tavenner was a recipient of the Virginia Commonwealth University’s Star
Alumni Award and is a current Fellow of the American College of
Healthcare Executives.
A native of Virginia, Marilyn was born in Martinsville and received her
diploma in Nursing from Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She later earned both
her degree in Nursing and a Masters in Health Administration from the
Virginia Commonwealth University.

Jeffrey D. Burke is divisional chief information officer for Bon Secours
Health System. As divisional CIO, Burke is a member of the CIO Council
that is focused on executing the company’s technology infrastructure,
strengthening its information services support initiatives, and
developing and implementing a new information systems model. His focus
includes development of the local information services teams working in
the Kentucky, Richmond and South Carolina Bon Secours markets.
Burke brings more than 30 years combined experience in the information
services, health care and finance fields to his position with the Bon
Secours Health System. He has worked with Bon Secours for 21 years
having served as Chief Financial Officer and Shared Services Executive
Vice President of Bon Secours Richmond Health System. In Richmond, he
consolidated and led the operations of information services, laboratory,
pharmacy, surgical services and materials management that served the
four hospital system. In this role he successfully led the development
of a high tech data center and infrastructure that was later developed
for use by all of Bon Secours.
Burke has also held leadership positions with Price Waterhouse where he
led efforts of the Richmond office in the use of computers in the
performance of audits and led the provision of services to the
organization’s health care clients. His roles at Sperry Univac included
the negotiation and management of information system contracts with the
Federal Government.
Burke received a bachelor’s of sciences degree in interdepartmental
sciences and mathematics from Washington & Lee University and a masters
in business administration from George Mason University.
Burke in 2005 and 2006 was appointed by the Governor of Virginia to the
Healthcare Information Technology Task Force. He is an active member of
the College of Health Care Information Management Executives the
Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). He
currently serves on the Board of Directors of Commonwealth Catholic
Charities, Chesterfield County Communities in School and Virginia
Hospital and Systems Services. He also is an adjunct professor at
Virginia Commonwealth University.

J. Rand Baggesen, M.D. is the Director of Executive Healthcare for the
Executive Health Evaluation Program at the CJW Levinson Heart Hospital.
A graduate of University of Rhode Island, Dr. Baggesen attended the
Medical College of Virginia and completed his residency in family
practice at Chesterfield Family Practice, a VCU/MCV/Chippenham
affiliated program. He served as chief resident and is currently an
associate professor of medicine at the Medical College of Virginia.

Brian Deasy is a Lead Consultant with Richmond-based
CapTech Ventures, Inc., a regionally-focused full service IT
consulting firm. As Director of CapTech's Healthcare Service
Offering, Mr. Deasy has managed engagments with large health
insurers, healthcare start-ups, regional health systems, and health
information exchanges. Mr Deasy is a member of the Virginia General
Assembly's Joint Commission on Technology and Science (JCOTS)
Electronic Medical Records Advisory Committee.
Mr. Deasy's consulting engagements have included architecting and
implementing a web-based personal health record system, an insurer's
Provider web portal, and an insurer's web-based pre-authorization
system. Additionally, he has served in enterprise architecture roles
for the Canadian operations of a major financial instituation and
one of the nation's largest health insurers.
Mr Deasy also directs CapTech's Enterprise Architecture Service
Offering and is currently engaged as the interim CIO of the Virginia
Workers' Compensation Commission.
