March 2002 Tech Barometer

"The Future is Looking Brighter"

Based on more than 300 responses to the March 2002 Tech Barometer, employment levels, sales, and profits in the tech economy will be improving in the coming months.  Although levels for all three surveyed metrics indicate strong growth ahead, the greatest positive change is expected to be in the number of new employees.

On the question of regional support for a referendum on increasing the sales tax, respondents were almost evenly split on whether to support a referendum that increased sales taxes to benefit public education versus no tax increase at all.

Nearly 96% of the respondents to the Council's response poll were from the Greater Richmond area, and they evenly represented companies with small, medium and large numbers of employees. 57% of responses were from technology producers or service providers, 17% were from tech employees of non-tech companies, the remaining 26% come from education, government, associations, and non-technology organizations or businesses.
