The largest technology growth sectors in the next five years, according to the non-scientific April 2002 Tech Barometer survey, appear to be Healthcare, IT Infrastructure and Information Security, and Application Development.  When asked "In terms of technology application or research, which of the following areas will provide the most opportunity for private sector growth and investment during the next five years" respondents of the April, 2002 Tech Barometer responded in the following manner:

When asked what they see as the biggest threat(s) to their business during the next six months respondents still believe a weak economy will have the greatest impact, at nearly the same ratio as they did in the March Tech Barometer.  However, when asked what some other threats might be, respondents answered:

  • Government budgets/spending

  • The reduction of vendor consulting lists

  • Glut of IT workers/retirement of key management personnel
