Calling all Techies!

The FIRST LEGO League needs your help!

What is FIRST?
FIRST (
http://www.usfirst.org/) designs accessible, innovative programs to build self-confidence, knowledge and life skills while motivating young people to pursue opportunities in science, technology and engineering.

What is the FIRST LEGO League? The FIRST LEGO League (FLL), considered the "little league" of the FIRST Robotics Competition, is the result of a partnership between FIRST and the LEGO Company. FLL extends the FIRST concept of inspiring and celebrating science and technology to children aged 9 through 14, using real-world context and hands-on experimentation.

With the help of LEGOTM MINDSTORMSTM Robotics Invention SystemTM technology, young participants can build a robot and compete in a friendly, FIRST-style robotics event specially designed for their age group. Using LEGO bricks and other elements such as sensors, motors, and gears, teams gain hands-on experience in engineering and computer programming principles as they construct and program their unique robot inventions.  Read more at:  http://www.firstlegoleague.org/

What’s the challenge?
The 2004 Challenge: Each FLL team will build and program a robot that addresses the specific needs of people who face physical challenges in today's society. Teams will research and present robotics technology solutions to help individuals in their community perform the everyday actions that many people today take for granted.

How can you help? Virginia First Lego League Teams Need Sponsors and Mentors. http://www.ext.vt.edu/vafll/

As of August 11, 2004 the following schools still need Mentors:
- St. Catherine's School (Richmond, VA)
- Pearson's Corner Elementary School (Mechanicsville, VA)

The first Coach/Mentor workshop in Richmond will be on Saturday, Sept 18. If you are interested in learning more, please email Philise Conein, at TECHEAD at philise@techead.com, or call (804) 782-6971, ext. 20.
