The Greater Richmond Technology Council Hands Out Technology Star Awards

Eighth Annual Event Recognized Area Organizations and Individuals for Outstanding Contributions to Central Virginia’s Technology Community

RICHMOND, Va., (May 2, 2003) – Last night, the Greater Richmond Technology Council honored five organizations/businesses and one individual among 30 finalists at its Eighth Annual Technology Stars Awards Program. Sponsored by Capital One, the event recognized the best and brightest stars in the region and recognized their outstanding achievements to the vital growth of technology in Central Virginia.

This year’s winners include:
IBM’s Leadership Award – Paula Gulak, founding partner of SyCom Technologies. Paula Gulak is a founding partner of SyCom Technologies, a Richmond-based IT Solutions and Resources company. Her experience in the IT industry spans 20 years and includes sales and account management, marketing management, public relations and business development. Paula is the former president and chair of the Greater Richmond Technology Council. She is a founding member and serves as the current chair of the Virginia Technology Alliance.

Deloitte & Touche's Emerging Company Award – Payerpath Inc. In 2002, Payerpath grew revenues by 125 percent and added 295 provider clients. Today, it supports more than 8,500 physicians in 15 states and processes more than one million claims transactions per month, making it the largest Internet-based claims clearinghouse in North America and an industry leader in the e-healthcare marketplace.

Infineon Technologies' Technology Innovation Award – PhysioAdvantage, LLC. Formed in 2002 as a spin-off from its parent company – Sleepmate Technologies – PhysioAdvantage commercializes sensor technologies and products from initial concept, through engineering design and development, to final product marketing within the medical and personal health monitoring markets. The company’s FDA-accepted, patented bio-sensor technology can be worn for days with no skin preparation, and is easily adapted to serve a wide range of applications, such as anesthesia, long-term seizure monitoring, EEG screenings, Neuro rehabilitation and ambulatory sleep diagnostics.

Ernst & Young's Community Suport Award – DNDS.com. DNDS.com provides cutting-edge, e-marketing and e-learning solutions to Fortune 1,000 firms, including SunTrust, Capital One, Exxon-Mobil, Northrup Grumman, Philip Morris and Freddie Mac. DNDS also provides e-solutions to non-profit organizations including: the Boys & Girls Club of Richmond, YMCA Tuckahoe, the Virginia Minority Supplier Development Council, the Kidney Foundation of Virginia, the Asian Society and Virginia Hispanic Chamber. The company’s “Angel Profits” program donates a portion of corporate profits each month to an employee-selected, non-profit organization.

Computer Resource Teams' Technology SkillBuilders Award – Engineering Specialty Center – Highland Springs High School. The long-term goal of the Engineering Specialty Center at Highland Springs High School is to prepare students to become practicing engineers. The program curriculum is modeled after college engineering courses. The Center has two engineers on staff as well as instructors for physics, statics, engineering economics and design. Students participating in the program are challenged in an accelerated program of studies in science, mathematics and technology. In the past three years, 39 program graduates have earned more than $750,000 in college scholarships pursuing technical degrees.
 

Reed Smith's IT Builders Award – CapTech Ventures Inc. CapTech Ventures has delivered mission-critical, e-business solutions to Fortune 500 companies, regional market leaders, as well as startups and non-profit organizations since 1997. The company has become a recognized leader in the financial services and health care markets, with clients that include; Anthem, Dominion Resources, Circuit City and Campbell’s Soup. This expertise, coupled with its internal Technology Lab and training program, has earned CapTech a reputation as a regional leader in advanced engineering skills and cutting-edge technology capabilities.
